TCA to NTCA aircraft rebuild

Unread postby Jayson v Schalkwyk » Mon Apr 16, 2018 5:27 pm

Hi guys,

(mods feel free to move this to a more appropriate section if deemed needed. I posted it here to try get more input)

Some friends and I bought a Piper Colt project late last year with the intention of getting the little aerrie flying again. Project is virtually complete, missing a few smaller components here and there - nothing that cant be sourced. It does not have a data plate or registered serial number. It has old logbook that was part and parcel of sale, but we cannot say if it actually belongs to this airframe. We believe it wings from one airframe and fuselage of another. Previous owners had already started the process of converting it to a tailwheel.

We decided not to spend any $$$ just yet until we can establish a few things. What I would like to try and find out from knowledgeable guys here on avcom, is, what is the procedure to get the paperwork ball rolling at CAA. I realise it will need a build number first. We won't be able to call it a Piper Colt or use that serial number so will decide on its own name etc. Will CAA accept that is in essence a rebuild not a new "design" - which is what we plan to do. We intend using all piper acceptable parts (replacements for what we missing)

Has anybody gone through this process before and if so, how big a job and how many hurdles did you face?

ANY input will be valued and appreciated.

Not at all a simple task. I have been trying for 3 years now on a project and even though i think i am close to getting it done it has cost a lot of frustrations, time and money. The bottom line is that if that model is still supported you will have a VERY difficult time getting it onto NTCA. It can and has been done however be prepared for a long long road......

Thanks RK.

I have no doubt it won't be easy but am convinced it's possible.

Supported by Piper? Or the certificate owner? Univair? Surely fact that it will be called a joesoap22 or what ever else we decide will render that requirement moot? We will be the builder of said plane even though it's based on a PA22.

If piper still supports that model then you are going to struggle. You can call it what you like it wont help. PM or call me and i can explain better.

There was a period ( 10-15 years ago?) when “Old” Type certified aeries we’re allowed onto NTC register so you do see some Cessna 150’s, Aeronca’s etc on the NTC register, it then seems CAA changed their minds about it. There is a gent here on Avcom, Jan Kemp, who has more recently successfully put both a Cessna 150 and a Piper Tomahawk (PA38-112) on the NTC register. IIRC both were rebuilds & were re-engined, the Tomahawk with an automotive engine. Try getting hold of him he may be able to guide you in the right direction? I don’t have his details unfortunately.

I was emailed by CAA Avcom account holder with a link to a PDF document on the CAA site. Thank you to that person!

For everybody's benefit, here is the link to said document. Section 10 of the document covers a transfer from TCA to NTCA.

Thanks for Jans details CWS. I will make contact with Jan too.
