SA's VHF Repeaters

Unread postby Segg » Mon Mar 05, 2018 7:31 pm

Hi Guys

Does anyone have a list of the physical locations of South Africa's VHF repeater stations, and their altitudes?
The reason I ask this is after experiencing poor VHF reception in some areas, and speaking to others who have experienced the same issues in the same places, we contacted ATNS to report the issues and got the response that these are uncommon events, when clearly they are not. These issues were experienced in different aircraft, with different (but modern, and in one case new) avionics in the same general areas on different dates

Knowing where these stations are will make planning a little easier, as it's really not the nicest thing being told to report a point, then not being able to get through to the controller :? One individual was even asked to report to the tower on landing after not being able to contact JNB East before entering Durban Special Rules [-X
what goes around, comes around.

Hi Segg, AFAIK the whole country should be covered FL110 and above via repeaters. Unfortunately our (NTCA/light a/c) transmitter strength/aerial capability is often at fault. ATC should have clear enough comms with us within say 50nm of their receivers at any height subject to obvious obstructions/terrain.

Most likely co-located with other ATNS navigation beacons such as VORs etc.
