this comes up often, empty weight is max a man can carry ~50kg this means expensive & fragile about 20-30k EU and VNE ~135km/h.

If you like foot launching go paraglider
If you like big sky soaring go sailplane (cheaper too)

When I flew hang gliders in the 80's, there was a guy flying a Fledge - not as sophisticated but the same idea.
Below is a video of one.

HJK, like Thermalator suggests, it a lot of money for very little airplane. Rather buy a LS4 or something like it. Lots more fun and possibilities
I'd rather be soaring

HJK I agree with you, looks like huge fun. Maybe some intrepid and enterprising "Souf Effrican" should do a similar home grown model. That should take care of the exchange rate ......

Here is what happens when you exuberantly do aerobatics (airshow) in a very limited aircraft. His BRS saves him

Didn't Otto Lilienthal have some thing like this?
BWOI of interest I saw for the first time a glider similar to this one a week ago. It is de-rigged at the moment but I will post a pic as soon as it is together.

There is no such thing as CHEAP flying. Whether it is a small hang glider or a JS3 with all mod cons, it all costs money. Especially if you only make a one off.

For R360 000 to R540 000 you would be able to buy at least 2 exceptionally competent real sailplanes.Maybe even 3. They would be 2nd hand of course but that wouldn't diminish your flying experiences in them.

.......
Jan - It is the same make of glider . Make no mistake it is a very sophisticated glider with quite a performance but flies in a very different performance bracket to conventional sailplanes . Ideal for slow flying along ridges in calm weather but not for our strong and turbulent conditions and high speed that conventional gliders are capable of .
Also really expensive by south african standards it does have a wheel and can be launched conventionally with a tow behind a trike or lsa aircraft..
The one in the video that broke up was quite simply flown beyond its flight envelope . It was rescued by a ballistic chute that brought the whole combo to the ground safely.

:D JCA myself being in aircraft manufacturing, I am well aware of that. Hence my comment regarding the exchange rate. With locally sourced and manufactured material it can be made more affordable, and one would then rather make a batch of the product.
Making the jigs and molds as one goes along the manufacturing process makes for a more priceworthy production run. But yes, as you rightly said, there is no such thing as cheap flying.

Ja indeed he had. The good old times. And he did not have to worry a thing about certification and CAA...
Then again, he was the first pilot to crash fatally in something that actually flew (as opposed to "plummet").
Despite this, one should not forget he managed more than 2000 flights and this was over 120 years ago. That's a tremendous achievement.

Who said the sky is the limit ? It's not. The CAA is the limit.

A friend in Germany took me to the exact spot where he made his flights from, there is a monument built on the site to honour him. I have a photo somewhere....will try and find it.

His flights were made to the left of the picture, there is a medium slope.
