My son in law's brother lives in Finland and they leave the babies outside in winter (well wrapped up) to get used to the cold.
It's done in Canada as well. Works wonders for the immune system, keeps them away from viruses and helps with acclimatization.

I had a lovely holiday in Norway earlier this year. It was amazing seeing primary school age children riding their bicycles to school in the morning. In the rain. On the main tourist highway. And being perfectly safe doing so. Proper 'free range parenting' - but in a society that makes this acceptable and safe.

Wishing James and the Mrs well for the flight over the Alps. I see they sorta heading towards Bolzano... back in 1992 when Peter and I flew up the valley leading up to the Brenner Pass and then Innsbruck, we passed Bolzano and through the Brenner Pass at 7000ft.

The mountains in that area are awesome, towering above you as you route up the valley, the Matterhorn being one section. (Max height 14688')
