I realised my question was asked of the wrong piece of kit. I was thinking radio not intercom.
No worries. The V16, N16 and A16 are all remotely mounted devices which needs an interface to be controlled by. Either an iEFIS or Razor. The MX1 does not have a built in radio.

My MX1 is on the way from Rainier, can't wait to see it work. :D

Also got the A16 audio panel and V16 radio.

Santa visited you nice and early. Great shopping basket there. I still have a few months before I can upgrade, but I have the same items on the list.

I'm tempted to get a Vega to run the radio and free up some screen real estate on the MX1.
I am also installing a Garmin GTR 200 Radio and a Trig TT22 Transponder (the most expensive piece in this whole set up). All will be driven by the MX1. The only item that will be visible in the panel, except the MX1 is the Garmin radio. :D

Just to clarify:
V16: COM radio module (dual frequency with RX on two frequencies with priority on main frequency - also includes the "say again" playback).
N16: NAV radio module (Dual/triple frequency receiver - dual VOR or VOR + Localizer and glideslope). It is the lowest cost navigation receiver on the market by quite a margin and has some pretty good specs to boot.
A16: (up to) six place, dual circuit stereo audio panel (intercom system) with lots of functionality, wired inputs, bluetooth phone and music streaming as well.
T16: Transponder. This has not yet been released but is in development. Mode-s with ADS-B out.

All of the above are modules you can squirrel away in a suitable location to favor wiring and accessibility for maintenance work.

They are controlled via "heads". Heads come in various flavors and each of these items can be controlled my more than one head if required. Currently heads for all of the above are MGL iEFIS (all variants including the MX1), Vega (2.25") and Razor (3.18") panel mount heads. The A16 can only be used with a Razor as it needs a bit more screen real estate (or an EFIS).
Older MGL EFIS systems like the Odyssey and Voyager can also be used (provided the hardware is at least G2 or has been upgraded to that level).

The V16 and N16 can be used individually or combined in non-MGL EFIS systems if at least a Vega or Razor head is used - via this the combo can emulate various types of radios that use the Apollo protocol (i.e. SL40, SL30 and the newer variants from big "G").

The form factor of all of the above modules allows the creation of a "super module" which should be out next year - this combines the A16, up to two V16 and N16 radios into a single module - greatly reducing wiring and installation effort even further.

Must it have at least an "on/off" knob?

I am based at FASD. They are quite simple to install. I will be putting it into the gyro and just keep the ASI and ALT steam gauges as a backup. The hardest part will be preparing the fiberglass instrument panel.

I will post some pics when done (before and after)

RK,

You are aware these can only be used in NTCA?

No unfortunately not. The XTreme has no provision at all to interface to any COM radios.

Okay thank you. So the cheapest option without going razor head would be mx1?
