FAMK - Madikwe East

Unread post by NickJB » Tue Oct 27, 2020 10:52 am

Hi Guys,

Planning a flight out to FAMK Madikwe East next month, will be my first time landing there and the plan is to stay over two nights.
I would really appreciate any advice/insight from anyone who has travelled there recently. I believe the strip is still in good condition but inspection is a must to ensure the runway is clear of any animals.. Even found this picture.. not sure how recent it is though  8)

Lastly is there anything else in that region worth flying over for some extra sightseeing

Thanks in advance for any input !

Hi Nick,

I'd like to know myself. As I understand it Madikwe East is a gravel strip. The photo there seems to be of FAMK which is the main strip.

Kind regards,

Ian

Thanks guys,

The picture posted above is Madikwe Eastern Strip according to google but then again I know better than to just trust a Google image.

Hopefully somebody here has been there fairly recently and can share their experience.

Can only speak of December last year but we sent a King Air 200 in twice with no issues at all and a client took their King Air 350 in Feb also no problems

I flew to Madikwe East in a Cirrus SR20 for a two night stay in early March. We had Elephants on the runway on arrival and Giraffes when we were planning to depart. I had arranged rather precise timing with the lodge before hand so a ranger was there to clear the runway before we landed. I ended up doing a low pass anyway.

I tried to find decent information on the strip but there wasn’t too much available other than the basics. I would recommend flying circuits to the South of the field. I joined a standard left circuit for Runway 11 and ended up flying right over a few lodges which is probably frowned upon.

The tar surface was fine but I had to dodge one or two large piles of Elephant dung. We departed at 10am and the temperature was already climbing fast. The baby Cirrus really struggled to climb on the way out and there are a few ridges to clear when you head back to the South. Keep an eye on the density altitude.

I did plan the flight to go over Pilansberg which was rather scenic.

Just some advise.

I do not know what pilots mean by a low pass. I have seen hot shots doing it 10ft at high speed claiming they are clearing the runway or checking for animals but I call BS on that. I found the best is at 400-500ft AGL at low speed and don't just check the runway check the surroundings what is in the bushes around the runway. The game rangers view are more limited than yours and it is generally the animal that walk unto the runway after touchdown that gets hit.

Hi everyone,

Something is weird on EasyPlan/EasyCockpit relating to Madikwe. Yes, there is the Western strip (FAMadiw) but then there are two strips on the eastern side: FAMK (which is a tarred strip and seems like the one you are referring to in this post) and FAMadikE which is called "Madikwe East" in EasyPlan and is also a gravel strip.

Does anyone have any clues?

Kind regards,

Ian

FAMK is correct. The other one is not on my Easyplan. If you are up to date, then suggest you notify Andrea at Easyplan to rectify

Thanks a bunch  FAMK it is.

I am actually up to date, seems it is only that way on EasyCockpit. Weird.

Great day everyone!
