Aircraft Make and Type: Cubby Wings, Cubby taildragger (X285) (ZU-DWY)
Year Model: 2005. Recovered and converted to taildragger 2012
Airframe Hours: 454hrs and counting
Engine Type and Hours: Aerovee 2,3L Fuel injected (21Hrs and counting) has a longer stroke for increased Horsepower
Prop type and Hours: P Prop (385 hrs)
Avionics and other equipment:
~ Altimeter
~ Airspeed indicator (MGL ASI3)
~ Compass (MGL)
~ EGT Indicator
~ Hobbs meter
~ ICOM A200 VHF radio
~ Oil Temperature Indicator
~ Oil Pressure Indicator
~ RPM Indicator
~ Turn and slip indicator
~ Vertical speed indicator

Reason for sale: Aircraft was bought to be used for hour building. I then had a change of career path which got me into the sporting industry. Due to the limited amount of Hours that i have to fly now it does not make financial sense for me to keep the aircraft. I also don't want her just standing there in the hangar not flying :(

Viewing Location: Morningstar Airfield, Western Cape
Price: R 220 000
Other information:
~ Cruising 90mph at approx.15lph, or 75-80mph at 12lph. Tanks are 45l each side, total 90l.
~ I installed a new 0hr aerovee engine, due to previous engine being unreliable
~ The new engine has no oil leaks, has a longer stroke which gives an increase in Horsepower, giving me an extra 15mph at same RPM as previous engine, a shorter take-off distance, and was also able to increase my Vertical speed by 1000 fpm at MAUW.
~ An oil circulation pump was also installed ensuring a longer lasting engine with many safe hours.
~ The aircraft has served me with many happy flying hours and I would love to keep her but it doesn’t make financially sense for me with the salary I earn, and the little amount of time I get off.


The aircraft was sent to Jean Crous from the Cubby Factory in Barrydale a week before Lockdown. The aircraft has been serviced, replacing a whole bunch of parts with new ones. You will therefore be purchasing a Spotless plane with a new ATF at a great price.

Bit more details please?
1)Aviation VW parts?
2)Was the Re-drive upgraded for the higher HP?
(Why I ask is that I designed and build most of the Cubby Re-drive units before the Cubby factory was sold. The 50mm units was for the early 2L engines, 60mm for the 2.180L and 80mm for the 2.3L engines.)
3)Oil circulation pump other than the standard oil pump that the engine have, or was it just the higher capacity oil pump that was fitted?

The engine was a 40hr total time engine, that was stripped and zeroed, The increase in HP was achieved by installing new 94mm pistons and sleeves, new big-end bearing, new main bearings, new cam bearings, new gaskets and seals was fitted. The previous owner who i know well did this to use on his aircraft that he was building, but was later told that the engine would be to small for his aircraft and therefor bought a Lycoming 0-235. I then purchased this engine to install in my Cubby and it is amazing, shorter takeoffs, increased speeds and quicker vertical climb. The oil circulation pump is an additional to increase engine cooling because at low taxi speeds not enough air flows over the engine and the cowling was adjusted slightly to increase airflow

I met up with Matthew this past weekend as I'm interested in purchasing an engine from him. To find the engine currently in his Cubby was proffesionally fitted by an extremely precise and knowledgeable person and 100% confidence should be had in the installation of the new engine. The re drive is not the original one fitted to the 2.1 Also the aeroplane is neat and I believe its a real performer in the Cubby class.

Judging by the oil pump cover, and the dual ignition cylinder-heads, my guess is , this engine was an Aero-Vee in its former guise. :wink:

We moved the aircraft, it is now at Swellendam Airfield waiting for the CAA airworthiness inspection prior to applying for the new ATF.
