That's a crappy headline given that Qantas have not flown scheduled services to South Africa (or most other long haul destinations) since Australia shut its borders in March. It won't be flying scheduled passenger services anywhere for a long while.

Some memorabilia from the beginning of the Wallaby Service by SAA and Qantas in 1957.

While it is important to be able to laugh at oneself, it is equally important not to be armed with an overwhelming amount of material.

This is more due to the fact that Australia won't be reopening their borders any time soon than anything else.

Cocos island - I actually had to look that up.

Seems like quite an agreeable place. Must stop there one day for a look see...

Spot the Ozzie connection: Prison island, Workhouse island, Misery island, burial island...

This is a devastating time, especially for airlines, and those who need to travel.

SA - AUS air bridge... Gone.

What the hell happened?

I agree - it's a terrible blow to families. I have a 90 year old aunt here in SA who is fading unfortunately and her only son and his family live in Adelaide with no way of getting here.

There are options to get from SA to Australia via Singapore, Dubai and Doha etc (subject to Aus Covid border restrictions)

Options yes, practicality of navigating them are very different, however.

I am an Australian permanent resident. I wanted to go "home" over Christmas. Had a scheduled flight on Thai Airways in mid-December cancelled (booked in May). Offered a one-way flight on a very random date through local embassy on Singapore Airlines for about $2,000 in economy. Would then need to pay $3,000 for two week hotel quarantine in Canberra. Still not sure how easy it would be to get from Canberra to Melbourne. Would then have to apply for permission to leave when I need to go back to work with no guarantee of being approved or the logistics of then getting back to Europe.

To say Australian border restrictions are very complicated and difficult is an understatement!

100% no go unless you are a permanent resident or citizen and willing to fork out the Aus$3000 pp quarantine costs.
