Paul De Wytt-Hilton RIP 1931-2017
If any one knew Paul De Wytt-Hilton, he died peacefully on the 19 December 2017 in the UK. He flew for South African Airways, Air Mauritius and DC3's for Africa Charter Airlines which was owned by Sherell Cunningham based at Grand Central. He was then doing part time instruction at Rand Airport. Due to his Parkinsons he left South Africa in 2011 to be cared for in the UK. His last words to anyone who new him was "Au Revoir my flying Friends, my memories of you all are with me now, remember me with Kindness please. Good bye and Happy Landings"

Met him when I got involved in a B707 operation (Impala Air) based at the then, Jan Smuts Airport. Paul was flying as a co-pilot there. From what I gathered he became a professional co-pilot ie didn't want the hassles of command.

It's only when I was recently browsing this site that I came across the obit.

I knew Paul well and during his last years in SA saw each other weekly, but we lost touch when he finally retired and moved to the UK as an adopted surrogate grandpa for their children by former wartime friends.

I am about 12 years younger but we met during the civilian flight Instructor's ground course and for a while instructed for the same crowd at Rand.

He used to visit us often, with his car until it was stolen and on his scooter afterwards. We used to sit on my stoep, under the thatch, sip coffee and reminisce about odds and ends.

If I am not mistaken he joined the SAAF at about 17 and flew and instructed on Harwards, and later flew Daks. After the SAAF he did crop spraying on Super Cubs and charters on Senecas, before he joined SAA and later Air Mauritius. When he was instructing on C150's C172's and PA28's he would come and fly my home simulator before IF renewal was due, until ESKOM killed my simulator.

If I am not mistaken, he flew until his 80th birthday which was about 31 August 2011 and after that he lost some of the interest in life.
