TBO

Unread post by Bundu » Wed Aug 05, 2015 7:18 pm

Latest development on TBO.
Extension to 10 years being promulgated at the moment, and then as per manual, On Condition until certain conditions are reached. These conditions are currently being tested and validated.
TBO currently is 8 Years and 1500 hrs with TBO extension to 10 years being published. Then On Condition for Amateur Built and Experimental aircraft with Commercial Aircraft having to stay with stated TBO times per Calender and run time.

On TBO topic.
We have a TBO rebuild and a Zero Time rebuild. With zero time, the engine is returned to Zero and with TBO, it carries running hrs from TBO point.
Minimum TBO cost is Euro 2500.00 and then parts re-machined as needed can go to Euro 6000.00 for a TBO engine
Considering that the 4 cylinder engines range from Euro 14600 to Euro 19600, its less than half the cost of a new engine,
Zero timing an engine would cost Euro 8800.00 and all parts are replaced as needed.

The crank shaft and journal bearings and conrod bearings can be replaced and line boring can be done, as well as oversize bearings etc.
Maintenance and costs were a chief consideration in the design and running costs of the engine.
So the UL engines are also very economical to run and overhaul! Running costs for planning a TBO run over 10 years for Euro 6000! Thats equivalent to Euro 50 Euro a month for overhaul planning...

Exhaust downpipe out of muffler

Unread post by Bundu » Fri Oct 09, 2015 7:31 am

On older engines pre 2012 please check for cracks on the muffler where the exhaust downpipe exits the muffler. We have found some mufflers cracking on this outlet. Pls contact UL Power South Africa at 083 485 2427 about remedial action.

Pls support your outlet pipe via a spring mount to the fuselage or engine mount to assist with carrying the weight of the downpipe and to help dampen any vibrations.
