Survey: Push Notification functionality from AvCom

Unread post by Roger » Thu Jan 30, 2020 12:34 pm

We are considering adding Push Notification functionality to AvCom and would like to gauge the likely uptake.

In case you do not know what that is, here is a quick explanation of a push notification:

A push notification is a message that pops up on your mobile device or somewhere on your PC screen.

App and website publishers can send them at any time; users don’t have to be in the website or using their devices to receive them. They can do a lot of things; for example, they can show the latest sports scores, get a user to take an action, such as downloading a coupon, or let a user know about an event, such as a flash sale.

Push notifications look like SMS text messages and mobile alerts, but they only reach users who have installed your app or allowed your site to send them these messages.

You may have seen these screens at some point:

Site requesting you to allow the notifcations:

And then the actual notification on Windows and mobile devices:

Some other info to consider before pressing the snap survey button. The default will be off - you will have to manually opt in for the service and even then can decide which of the below notficiations you wish to receive, and even turn it off later.

AvCom Notfications can be pushed to you for:
  • Someone replies to a topic you have bookmarked
  • Someone replies to a topic to which you are subscribed
  • Someone quotes you in a post
  • Someone creates a topic in a forum to which you are subscribed
  • Someone sends you a private message
If you drive an Apple device, sadly the Safari browser is not supported, which means if you would like to receive these push notifications, you would have to visit AvCom from an alternate browser installed on your apple device.

Browsers supported are:
  • Desktop:
    Google Chrome
    Mozilla Firefox
    Opera
    Microsoft Edge
  • Android:
    Chrome
    UC Browser
    Samsung Internet
    Firefox
    Opera Mobile

We will only consider it if there is a positive uptake and benefit to our members. Go ahead and press the survey button now.

....what could work as a push button notification is the following; in a sale post I want uncle Bear to supply us a nice pic of the a/c, I enter his name push the button and notify him that his help or response or what ever is needed!

...would that be possible?

It is envisaged only for the items listed above. You could however achieve the same if you were to send a PM to Uncle Bear, and assuming he has opted in to receiving the push notification.

Please no too much already information overload at this age, I prefer to have the choice to go and see if I so desire, but if I choose not to leave me alone.

If the option goes ahead please include the choice to turn it off.

Won't have to turn it off. By default it will be off. It is something you will have to purposely turn on. (bold, green print in our post ). I think many hold a similar stance. Personally hate being subscribed to something that I have to go and turn off or opt out of.
