This is more of a "Where did I WISH I went with my Robbie" post.

31st of December came and we were up at 04h30 to get an early start down the south coast of KZN. HappyJabbi had offered local weather in PMB and Blacksmith had offered hangerage at Munster, about 10kms from our first destination in Port Edward. No parking for RUT in Port Edward but, what the heck, the friendly Avcommers had come to the rescue.

After poring over the weather forecasts, spot graphs, satellite photos and calling Met I called off the flight and we piled into the Volvo and set course for the holiday. I don't know who else does it but for the entire trip I am staring at the clouds and weather trying to figure out if I had made the right decision. Everytime there is a ray of sunshine I kick myself and everytime the cloud ceiling drops to next to nothing I congratulate myself.

Anyway, the Port Edward place is nothing to write home about (other than the absolute kindness and assistance offered by Blacksmith to a total 'Avcom' stranger). It is the trip to Kob Inn that is worth mentioning. On 4th Jan it took us 8hrs (and maybe a speedfine for doing 75 in a 60 zone) to drive to Kob Inn from Port Edward in the rain and truck traffic. The last 32km on dirt took us 1h40, longer than my planned flight time from Munster to Kob Inn.

Some may remember a heli incident at Kob Inn somewhere around the middle of last year. I discussed it briefly with Daan van Zyl, the manager and co-owner of Kob Inn and he was quite pragmatic. He was still keen to welcome heli visitors despite the accident. Good for you, Daan.

Kob Inn is as close to the sea as you will EVER get and it was a pleasure to fall out of bed and admire the ocean view. The attached picture is from the Kob Inn brochure and shows the heli landing spot between the Jungle Jim next to the pool (on the left) and Bar area (on the right). With a strong Easterly/Westerly (along the coast) the area is quite confined but doable with a bit of spare power to allow an abort. Daan says that they have had up to 3 choppers parked on that area but I would not like to be one of them! The grass area to the right is a lot steeper and smaller than it looks but a 206 landed there during our stay but didn't shut down.

Food is good, relaxation potential is excellent. Disregard the 3 star rating. Beats the pants of the 4 star place in Port Edward. 0h30hrs from EL. 1h15 from Margate and about 4hrs from Jhb (11hrs by road, at least). I can't wait to give it a try in RUT.
