Bushbaby and Explorer 582 upgrades

Unread post by stefan » Thu Jul 17, 2014 10:48 pm

The development of a new firewall forward kit for the Rotax 582 engine on the Bushbaby and Explorer should be done by end of next week. We modified the engine mounts so the engine can be mounted upside down with the gearbox still in the upright position. This allows us to use the Rotax 912 Explorer cowl on both the older Bushbabies and the new Explorers. This way the aircraft retains is sexy looks, is faster and the CG is more forward than on the old engine mount. The raidator can now also be place on top of the engine in cold air.

Very good move, great to see someone thinking about trying to keep flying affordable, (fast becoming unaffordable). I have a 582 blue top in a Jora and it makes that aerie go like the clappers, I'm sure it will do the same in a lovely airframe like the Explorer. It's the next cheapest way to fly after paragliding :D.

The plan worked. The engine mount is done and fits nicely in the 912 cowl.

Thanks Stefan, makes a lot more sense. Makes the older aeries look just a little more modern and sleeker.

Can't wait my turn...

Vir die cowls en engine mount sal dit seker so om en by R8k wees. As jy die volledige firewall forward kit vat met alles wat daarmee saamgaan sal dit so R11800

Took a while to complete the whole conversion but it all worked out as planned.
Some pics. CLM will be done next week.
