You know, as a journalist, I've developed a supertanker load of cynicism about humans and the sh#t we do. But, wow, to walk off on your kids. Phew. That's real desperation. Feel sorry for everyone but especially the kids ...excolonial wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2019 6:41 pmYes, it seems the parents were broke and could not cope.

Re: Emigration options
There are plenty of Facebook groups to join if you have a specific country in mind to emigrate to with people busy and others already there helping those trying to get their stuff in order to emigrate.
However, here is a nice group I came across which is a group of South Africans all over the world with short testimonies of where they are and how they got there.
Not just the mainstream Auz, NZ and UK, but weird and wonderful places like Paraguay, Panama and love and behold, my original first option...Vanuatu
There are already SAFFAS there and I did not know that till now.....doing exactly what I had in mind.....

Just about anywhere we go people know where we come from just from our accents. They all have a Saffa up the road.

Re: Emigration options
Funny thing , the first expat job I applied to was for the then BODC in Vanuatu , from an ad in the back of a flight magazine in 1990, I could not even point to it on a mappaulw wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 7:27 pmThere are plenty of Facebook groups to join if you have a specific country in mind to emigrate to with people busy and others already there helping those trying to get their stuff in order to emigrate.

Re: Emigration options
For those traveling soon and taking their pets with:
I heard that Onderstepoort now take 4-5 months to do Titre tests.
Someone else was saying she had to go back after two months to re-do Titre tests (well the dog) as Onderstepoort just didn't test and then the blood was too old or something.
But hear this. Now apparently Onderstepoort lost their license to test blood and HARC in UK doesn't accept the results of Titre tests on or after the 14th of October and pets will go into quarantine upon arrival.
This happened now already to some pets and the quarantine is 3 months (I believe) and imagine the costs and stress.
The same may happen in other countries too.
Best is to use IDEXX and have blood send to Germany for tests. It is quicker and more accurate in anyway.
But make sure the correct forms are completed as there are two forms. One to use IDEXX as courier to send blood to Onderstepoort and another to send blood to Germany.
Make sure your Vet knows this as in my experience not all know this. (Or their assistants)

EDIT: I believe Onderstepoort now send blood to the UK for testing that is why it is taking longer and I believe animals going to AUZ and NZ must have it done by Onderstepoort. My Vet told me that there was an agreement that animals going to EU can have tests done via IDEXX in Germany but all others to go to Onderstepoort.
So I don't know what will happen to animals going to NZ. Do they still have to go via Onderstepoort with their issues or can they go via IDEXX/Germany. Who's rule is this?

Great, thanks. It helps a lot with my planning.

My fight with SA will be on next year but according to my accountant we should not be liable for the tax difference in SA although I am a SA citizen.

Go for Spain Whirly! Good climate and Nice friendly people! And you can do business worldwide. We have a group of about 50 Spanish woman athletes here at the moment and I can tell you one thing they are also very pretty and friendly.Whirly wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2019 11:59 amJan,HJK 414 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2019 10:30 am

Great, thanks. It helps a lot with my planning. This means we need to spend time in three countries per year, for as long as we can physically do so. Doing it that way will ensure that we only pay tax in one of the three countries, we won't be paying in SA nor Spain.

My question: If I live on my yacht in the Med, where do I live? And is it possible to live nowhere?..

....no such thing, your yacht will have a flag to sail under - place of registration, that will be your default country of residence!

If push comes to shove we will find Marius a nice farm here in Spain and get him to raise some bull fighting "equipment" ……
They could probably do with his level of knowledge over here …….
