Investment ideas and recommendations

Unread post by macdaddy » Wed Sep 16, 2020 9:25 am

Good day all,

I have had a look and can’t seem to see a topic on this subject.

I would like to get some recommendations from the knowledgeable members out there that have perhaps had experience in this regard.

Obviously with the economy the way it is and possible further devaluing of our Rand, I am looking at my best options for offshore investments. Emigration is also looking like an eventual option, but not at this stage.

One of my main investments in SA was in the property market, but have since sold the properties and am looking at investing the net proceeds elsewhere. My end goal is to look at purchasing a rental ski property in Europe, but that will only be in a couple of years from now.
Ideally I am looking at getting the money offshore into a Euro (possibly USD or GBP) investment account, where I will be able to eventually withdraw and make a payment from that account to another European account, avoiding having to bring it back to Rands to pay for the property to be purchased.

I have British Citizenship so not sure if I could benefit from that at all.

I am hoping on getting some valuable input.

Thank you!

I am not a financial planner, but have walked the path you need to follow through the jungle.

Ah investment ideas.... many have many but remember a couple of things... and no please do not contact me  I worked in this industry for a long time and became a cynic if the truth be told shortly thereafter....

1. One cannot be unbiased earning a commission IMHO

2. Watch the fees... that can kill your investment

3. Liquidity is important in a country such as SA... what it costs to get in, what it costs to get out

4. Often the actual share is better than the companies "investments"... big insurers work for shareholders more than policy holders. The CEO earns off his share options and not his endowment

5. Try and ignore the delayed tax benefits... the government is watching this and can change things on a whim

6. You living in a high risk country, dont invest additional funds here too... remember most of your assets are likely in SA, so diversify (overseas?)

7. If it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is... even if you mate says so

8. Past performance is no indication of future

9. Guarantees usually cost money... no such thing as a free lunch

10. Just because an advisor works for a large bank doesnt mean he/she is more honest... see 1. above

I'm sure others can add more to the above...

any investment in FIAT currency at this point is a bad idea.

If Warren Buffet and Robert Kiyosaki, as well as half of Wall Street, are buying millions of USD worth of Bitcoin then perhaps they know something we dont... Buffet and Kiyosaki say that BTC, Gold and Silver are their three investment buys at the moment.

OR they have made their money on it and its simply part of their diversification strategy... course they say that considering they are heavily in them... talk it up is also part of their strategy... the average Joe jumps in too late...

Falafel pretty much hit the nail on the head. I would have a look at distressed corporates that have either government support or a real chance of recovery. Multiples to be had in these times.

Cryptos are as big a gamble as anything out there, but may be worth a punt if you are ahead of the wave...

Bitcoin is just as volatile as any FIAT currency, the difference is that Bitcoin is still up 20% year on year.
