Corona viruses are very common and are around every flu season.
This one is just a lot more dangerous.

All pathogens are "dangerous" - once this outbreak is "over" or "contained" we will be able to tell if it is more serious than the "flu" virus as we know it.

People forget that the common flu virus kills between 300000 and 600000 annually and the largest portion of deaths are among those who are sick and the elderly.

I had a few pints with an infectious diseases specialist here the other day, and I suggested it was a bit hyped for the fatality rate. He tended to agree but also said that containment and over-reaction was better than ignoring it. Suggesting SARS was worse.

He also explained that the Spanish flu was unusual in that it killed mostly young healthy adults, not simply because the initial hotspot was amongst the soldiers of WWI, but globally as well after it spread.?!

But the flu....

The Flu also hasn't knocked off 0.2% of global GDP in the last week-

That alone should scare you-

Interesting to read that abut 80% of deaths were males over 60 with underlying medical conditions. So it seems that younger healthier people are not really in danger.

20% of infections from all ages groups require hospitalisation as opposed to about 1% with seasonal influenza.

So fatalitly rate is low which is good- but may affect ability of health care system to cope.

I don't think this is especially bad, the general levels of alarm are a concern for the economy and ability of health care systems to cope. This may be a black swan event that's enough to push us into global recession. Don't think RSA really needs this right now,

That footage seems very disturbing. what is it supposed to be? Shooting of quarantine breakers?
