Before she was N98F, she was 62-01968. Arriving in Vietnam in 1962, she later joined the 114th Assault Helicopter Company: “The Knights of the Sky” in Vinh Long, Vietnam and served there until her return to the United States in 1971. With the Knights, she had the name “Miss Fit” painted on her nose and survived when so many others didn’t.
Now, she’s quite probably the oldest flying Huey in the world, as she was #488 out of 10,005 produced. She wasn’t even a UH-1B when she flew off the production line in 1962, she was an “HU-1”: hence the name “Huey”. It wasn’t until #932, in 1964, the U.S. standardized naming and that series became the “UH-1”. She still bears her HU-1 data plate, a proud reminder of her origin. What a career she’s had: gunship, troop carrier, medevac bird, National Guard aircraft, agricultural aircraft, movie star, fire fighter, and now, the source of smiles and memories for all who fly or ride in her.
