EFATO,

I can recal when I gave instruction at FABB, that I always tried to turn out early, because the possibilities ahead are not good at all

From the fb images - what is this? I don't see the wings, is it conceivable this was an initial impact point where wing/s sheared off? There's significant scorching over a wide area leading up to the wreck but...\ Its a very confusing scene - was the wreckage moved?

Must have been off 36.

Very little options if you maintain runway heading. As RET commented, right hand turn out at about 45 degrees alongside the dam is the safest climb out route.

RIP.

I remember taking off there 3 up in a PA28-140 once with a stiff x-wind. The poor 140 really did not perform well and Wattville is really not well placed for any margin of error. In the RV8, that performs really well, I almost always turn fairly early within the airport perimeter , traffic permitting. I have flown for many years out of FABB and first flight was back 30yrs ago on the 9th of Feb. My thoughts with the Skyafrica people K&G, RIP to the deceased.

From the google earth image, seems like he went for the only piece of open field in the area, the sports grounds of the school. It is just to the right of the extended centre line, about 30 deg.
