Please read and digest....summers coming

Unread post by Mike Wissing » Fri Sep 13, 2019 2:41 am

SA's aviation community,

Summer is coming, pilots are rusty and the day are becoming more conducive to those long flying days.

Yesterday I was on a search for an overdue airplane in NE Oregon, USA.
We found him. His airplane was piled up on a hillside at about 6000' asl. He did not survive. Lives are forever altered because of a big mistake. Kids and grandchildren lost their Grandpa.
We flew around the site at 1000'agl guiding the Chinook and ground teams in, and the tears were flowing in the airplane.

The ugly, totally avoidable fact of CFIT reared its head again. He has ZERO chance of survival once he scud ran into those mountains.
Please don't do it. Get-there- itis is a killer and no one is immune.

I don't want to read about it here on Avcom, so if there is doubt about your planned flight, THERE IS NO DOUBT. Ground yourself and either drive to your destination, or wait for another day.

This is a humble and heartfelt plea from a Search and Rescue pilot - please, please listen. [-o<

Well said guys. Could not agree more.

And if I may add to Mike's post, American pilots have amazing ATC support that we do not have here in SA, so we need to be just that extra vigilant when it comes to weather.

That may be the case, but don't be shy to ask ATC for assistance if needed. I once landed in trouble coming out of Swaziland, in October 2016. I looked at the radar images and saw something coming, but thought I had plenty time to get out. The rookie in me did not realize the radar image was an hour old. I landed up in a major storm and was really scared. I asked ATC for assistance and they guided me trough a gap in between two cells and got me home safely. I make different go / no go decisions now ..... That controller saved me that day. Don't be shy to ask.
