If I didn't already have two Champs I would have bought these two.
Champs ( the forefather of the Citabria, Decathlon and Scout) are the most underrated aircraft for very reasonable prices these days.

And it flies circles around a J3

Two Aeronca Champions, two spare Continental engines and other spares for sale.

The Aeronca Champion was designed to be an improvement on the Piper J3 Cub. The Champ has no vices and is one of the very few taildraggers that allows you to see the runway in the 3-point attitude from the pilot seat. (Solo from front or rear seat). Compared to the J3, it is better/faster because the engine is fully cowled, aileron rigging internal and no bungees etc. The Aeronca Champ can still be bought new for about R2.5M. They are on the same type certificate as the Citabria and spares are still available. These two aircraft are the most original of the few in SA although both aircraft are in Part 24.
The Champs have 50 litre nose tanks and burn 16 to 18 litre per hour at 85 mph true in smooth air. I did my PPL in ZS-BBS at Springs Airfield in Summer; they climb steeper than a C152.

One set J3 Cub leaf springs.

Spare Engines.
C85 -12 Engine with Continental blanks on the starter and generator drives.
The engine was bought from the AMO at Secunda in pieces with no log books. It is now almost finished overhauled but still in pieces.
New Cam.
New Cam Followers.
New 15 thou Pistons, Rings plus Piston Pins.
New Oil Pump.
New Valves.
New Bearing Set.
New Conrod Bolts.
New Through Bolts.
New Gasket Set.
New Ventury/Jets for carb - needs to be done still.
The cylinders were overhauled by the late Rockey at Springs AMO.
Case and Crank magnefluxed. – Case through bolts tapped for helicoils (Standard better than new repair) – helicoils not installed yet.
Bendix Mags need overhaul.
I’m sure I forgot some other new stuff but I think you get the Idea of what it is.
I have R50K in it and would like to get it back if possible.

A65-8 Engine stripped by Secunda AMO which had obviously low hours – cylinders still at standard and useable size. No log books. Needs pistons, bearings, gaskets, magnetos. Crank, metal parts and case magnefluxed. Crank polished. Then I have extra cranks, conrods, pushrods, carbs etc.etc. The AMO sold all their Small Continental second hand spares to me. +/- R20K

Very interesting - what about ICAO compliance? - what is the NZCAA problem with SACAA?
