Accident history

Unread post by Ray W » Thu May 13, 2021 1:59 pm

I've been asked to to try to help someone track down an accident but I have almost no info to go on. I'm hoping that someone might have an idea.

All I have is this

Date 29/02/1980

Near Meyerton. Aircraft was apparently enroute from Rand to Durban but broke up in flight,

I know thats very little to go on but I'm hoping somebody may remember something.

The only one I remember somewhere about that time near Meyerton, was a Seneca from FAVG to somewhere in the Jhb area. If I recall correctly, having seen the aircraft at FAVG a few days earlier, it was ZS-OTO and had GEARBOX EXCHANGE painted on the tail. It exploded in midair at dusk and I seem to remember that there were about 5 people on board. It was thought at the time that a fuel leak was the cause.

Sorry for the Hi-jack! But seeing that report and the mid-air at Sabie, my dad told me about that, it was right over the airfield and the Emeraude was one off two that they build. They also build two Turbulents built that was not one off them. IIRC the one pilot passed away and the other ended up in a wheelchair, very sad!
