Going ahead and landing on a taxiway was poor airmanship.

Not the first nor the last time this has happened. Most major airport's taxiways are the size of regional airprit's runways so he can be forgiven. At the end of the day nobody died. Errors happen on a daily basis in the airline industry and the average man in the street does not even get to hear about them. This is nothing but a storm in a teacup as someone mentioned earlier

Not quite sure that Erika got his explanation right either if she got the CAA's written response so badly wrong. I feel for the pilot. Landing at an international airport as a non-professional pilot is daunting. The pressure can be enormous and we all know that pressure affects our ability to make correct decisions.

Give the man a meeting with no tea and scones to explain his side and let's move on. There are far more serious infringements happening within GA on a daily basis.

Can you also just arrive in a sterile environment like that with dangerous goods, ie a rifle, onboard?

Filing a flight plan in Bloemfontein is OK, however if you don't activate it via radio contact with the local controller, Bloemfontein, it stays closed.

Also, I’m not sure you can ‘clear’ a weapon with customs officials in Bloemfontein. It’s not a port of entry is it? You’d have to clear your baggage again prior to boarding your flight from ORT.

ORTIA, will use 03 L for departures, and 03 R for arrivals, so if something smaller and slower arrive, they will clear them to 3L, not to upset the arrival sequence, therefore, left left... means 03L, not A taxiway.

ACSA has this all on solid state recordings, so called ‘tapes’, the pilot and his legal should get hold of this, cause the lynch mob, right or wrong, will base everything off that ATC ‘cleared to land’ instruction....

I fly into ORT often in slow aircraft and the majority of landings are assigned to 03R or 21L. ATC will only give us the closer runway for landing if it is not busy. The sequencing is planned long before you get handed over to tower . It starts with Area and then Radar.

I am referring to ATC's planning for sequence...not the pilots planning....
For a pilots planning, it also doesn't have to be long before departure. If you are used to doing it, a flight plan can be filed,weight and balance done, ctot arranged, notams and weather checked withing 10 mintues before walking out to the aeroplane.

I was told that when flying with firearms to / from ports of entry, even for a domestic flight, firearms will need to be cleared. I had a bit of an argument at Upington last year when flying in from Eagle's Creek with a Cherokee full of guns for a hunting trip. My argument was private plane, private flight, private guns, local departure with local destination, but a very serious local police officer explained the rules to me and I complied. Process took more than an hour though .... I could not find any publicized regulations to this effect and actually forgot about researching the reg, till reading this thread now. Any one care to comment on that please ?
